The Joy of the Texas Rangers

I grew up in the heart of Texas, and how enjoyable it was. I loved Abilene and had a great childhood there as far as the settings go. In the household though, things were very different.

As a youngster, for the first few years of my life, I had a great life. My mother and father raised me in a wonderful Christian household. I was brought to church with them every week, never missing a day. My parents were both raised in the church so naturally they were going to do the same with me. Even at the age of three I remember playing in the nursery with other children. I remember going to Vacation Bible School and learning about stories in the Bible (mainly David and Goliath) even as a young child.

Everything changed when I was about 5 years old. When my mother switched jobs, it forced her out of the house every Sunday. Then my father decided to keep busy around the home while she was gone. We all stopped going to church, and there was an obvious rift between both of my parents. This led to a divorce three years layer.

When I'd ask my mother about them, she'd always promise me that everything was fine between the two of them. She'd even go so far as bringing my father to the house so that it'd appear they were still together (even though they'd always either argue or not speak to each other when he was here).

There was something good that came out of this, though. Between the ages of 8-10 I spent a lot of time in my room. I wasn't fortunate enough to have a television, but I did figure out how to use my radio. I turned the music up loud enough so that I wouldn't have to hear my parents argue. It was one day, though, that I was switching through the channels and I heard a different voice. I heard "it's three balls and one strike". Three balls? One strike? Sure, I remember playing with balls in my backyard as a kid. My dad and I use to play catch with balls, sometimes even a baseball as I got earlier. But that's all. So what were balls and strikes? What did they signify?

I kept listening and I heard more terminology: home run, strikeout, walk, ground out, fly out. I still wasn't sure what was going on, but I did gather enough information to realize I was listening to my first baseball game. My father always talked about Nolan Ryan when his friends were over. He talked the Rangers and sometimes he brought some balls back from the ballpark for me. I had heard about it, but I had never actually experienced it. Even just listening to the game kept me on the edge of my bed. Well, I was actually standing up right next to where the radio was sitting most of the time. But at the age of 8, I became a baseball fan.

When my dad would come over I went right to my room hoping a baseball game would be on. I became a Rangers fan by the age of 9. I told my mom I listened to the games and she went out and bought me a Rangers hat that I wore all over. I even wore it to school everyday. My friends would ask me "did the Rangers win last night?". Unfortunately the 1983 season for the Rangers wasn't exactly a great one (77-85), but every time our beloved Rangers won we loved to talk about it. Even at the ages of 8 and 9!

The Texas Rangers were truly my escape during my childhood. They'd take me away from all of my pains, and give me an outlet that made me happy. To this day, I love the team and experience the same joy with each win that I did back then.

Seinfeld Season Three - 'The Parking Garage' - Jerry, Kramer, Elaine and George all go out shopping for the day. Kramer buys an air conditioner and Elaine gets herself a gold fish. After they have finished shopping the group forget where they have parked there car, and split up to look for it. Jerry is in desperate need to use go to the toilet, so Kramer tells him to go behind a car; Jerry is caught by security and interrogated. Later the same thing happens to George.

Seinfeld Sean Six - 'The Chinese Woman' - After Jerry spots Georges dad talking to a man in a cape he tries to call George and tell him. However, Georges line gets crossed and Jerry winds up talking to a lady named Donna Chang, whom he believes is Chinese, but is actually white. Jerry starts dating Donna who acts and behaves like a Chinese woman. Meanwhile, Donna starts talking to Georges mother,Estelle, over the phone and talks her out off divorcing Frank. Estelle pulls out at the last minute, due to the fact that she thought she was getting advice from a Chinese woman.

Flashback 2001: A New Era Begins

The Patriots were continuing their up and down season. They lost 10-3 to the Jets at home and lost their franchise quarterback for an indefinite amount of time. The Colts were being viewed as the greatest offense every assembled after putting up 87 points over the first two weeks of the season. With Tom Brady acting as game manager and with a running attack that put up 177 yards, the Patriots blasted the Colts 44-13.

Things were short-lived for the time being though. The next week, the Patriots were dominated by the Dolphins, having lost by 20 points. New QB Tom Brady's 86 yards were dismal compared to his performance against the Colts the week before. New England was now 1-3.

The Chargers came into Foxboro at 3-1 after a disappointing loss to the Cleveland Browns the week before. The last thing the Patriots wanted on their hands is an angry team. A team which had rookie and soon to be Fantasy Football stud LaDanian Tomlinson in the backfield and local sports hero Doug Flutie at the helm.

It didn't seem like the Pats would win this game, and odds makers certainly didn't seem to think so either. However, it was always fun to watch football anyway. To everyone's surprise, this was a monumental game, as it marked the beginning of a new era: the Tom Brady era.

This was a great football game in every sense. Each team scored back and forth through the first few quarters, until the Chargers scored a touchdown on a defensive recovery that put them up 26-16. The game looked like it was finished at this point.

Glad I did! Tom Brady led drives which resulted in a FG and a game tying TD to tight end and East Boston native, Jermaine Wiggins. Brady was no longer the timid game manager but now the field captain marching his team down the field with leadership and an ever burning competitive fire.

The game went to overtime and there was no way Brady was going to let this slip away. He drove the team into field goal range and future 2-time Super Bowl winning kicker, Adam Vinatieri drove home the 23 yard gamer winner. Foxboro stadium was going ballistic! I couldn't believe this Brady kid was for real.

For real, indeed. Brady finished the game 33 for 54 for 364 yards and 2 TDs. He was now putting up Bledsoesque numbers. There was something different about Brady, he seemed so calm in the pocket and didn't make the Bledsoesque blunders. On October 14th, 2001, Tom Brady came into his own and has never looked back. And I was there.

Ten Must Have Hiking Ingredients

Here is a list of must have items sure to make your outdoor experience safer and more enjoyable. These are applicable for dayhikes and backpacking trips.

First recommendation is to obtain a map of the area that you will be hiking. You don't want to become lost, so pick up a map at the visitor center, ranger station or download one at www.usgs.gov. If you suffer an injury, you can use the map to aid rescuers in locating you.

Get yourself a good map reading compass. Using the map and compass together, you can orient your map to your direction and surroundings, choose the correct path and keep yourself on course.

Staying hydrated is crucial. You can survive about a month with no food, but only a few days without water. You can become dehydrated quickly by exertion, perspiration, heat and exposure. It's a good idea to have 2 one liter bottles of water. Also, carry some water purification means with you. I use a liquid water treatment drops.

Take a bit more food than you think you will need, to get you through an extra day if need be. This can easily be accomplished by having a few whole food bars with you, each of which constitute a complete meal replacement. Important for maintaining energy output.

Bring a couple more layers of clothing. These will serve to keep you warm and dry should the temperature drop unexpectedly, you somehow become wet or both. Choose layers that are synthetic. Most of them will still retain some insulative quality even if they are wet and they tend to dry a lot faster.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

Have a personal first aid kit and know how to use everything in it. Suffering an injury in the wilderness is no fun. You can assemble your own with supplies from home, but include triangular bandages and moleskin or mole foam. You may want to consider taking a basic wilderness first aid course.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Don't forget the sunblock. Bring some sunglasses as well and you may want a cap with a visor or brim for extra UV protection. Your skin and eyes will be much happier.

Tiger's Disappointment to the Golf World

Golf fans were all stunned today when Tiger Woods was defeated by an unknown Y.E. Yang at the PGA championship. The lead was all Tiger's, and to have seen him blow it, well, many weren't expecting it to put it lightly. Yang is the first ever Asian golfer to ever win a major event, and this is the first time Tiger Woods ever lost a major on the last day after having held the lead.

Yay? I don't think the PGA, it's sponsors, or the casual golf fan are very happy. Tiger Woods in the starter, middle reliever, and closer for the PGA. Without Tiger, as we saw last year, no one cares. Now, people are getting the feeling that Tiger has lost it. He didn't win a major this year and pretty much choked away the PGA Championship after missing the cut at the British Open.

Woods is by no means past his prime. After returning from an injury that ended his 2008 campaign, Woods has bounced back with wins at five tournaments. Some of these involved some vintage Woods Sunday comebacks. Unfortunately, the majors are far more watched than the other tournaments, so the typical sports fan doesn't realize that all's not lost in Tiger's corner.

Yang winning is good, at the moment. But looking back 20 or 30 years from now, wouldn't you rather tell your kids or grandchildren about how the greatest golfer of all time beat some other guy in a 12-hole playoff after holing out from the fairway on 18. Wouldn't you rather have told your grandkids about how Tom Watson, the old geezer like you, won the British Open instead of pushing an 8 foot putt way to the right and self-destructing in a 4 hole playoff?

Yang will probably make few headlines anytime soon, and the once "sure prospect" of Woods beating Jack Nicklaus' record for majors one is suddenly not such a sure thing anymore.

And for the 2009 golf season, there's not exactly much that fans can look forward to at this point. Will a Fedex Cup tournament excite them? Not exactly. There's really not much to look for.

We need the Tiger, the best golfer, to be well, the best golfer. He needs to hold leads on Sunday. He needs people to be scared on the last few holes with Tiger on the prowl. We need Tiger Woods to dominate everybody and ask questions later. If he's labeled the best, he needs to start performing in the biggest and best events.

Let's hope that 2010 brings us the return of Tiger Woods, just as the 2009 tennis season has done for Roger Federer after a disappointing 2008. While fans may have cheered on Yang as he defeated Tiger today, you can be sure they're pulling for Tiger over the long run.

Buchholz Makes Good With Boston

It seems like everyone has always had criticism for Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher. Whether they point out his young age, his height, the unworthy hype he receives, or anything else, people are always ready to point out his flaws.

This past Wednesday, having taken the mound for just the 7th time in 2009, he faced off against Roy Halladay, one of the best pitchers in baseball. This was a game that mattered very much, and the Blue Jays were favored to win it.

Despite the expectations, Buchholz came out and looked like Halladay usually looks. Allowing just 1 ER in 6.0 innings pitched, Buchholz outshone the all-star Halladay, who gave up 4 ER in only 5.0 IP. Buchholz is a work in progress, but has continuously improved during his stint with the Sox in 2009.

While Buchholz's performance against Halladay is obviously impressive, the two starts before this one were nearly as difficult. One was against CC Sabathia of the Yankees. During this game, Buccholz only allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched. The other one was against Justin Verlander of the Tigers, in which case Buchholz surrendered just one earned run in seven innings pitched. Simply put, he's been solid.

While there have been struggles - namely a horrendous outing against Baltimore before this stretch of quality starts - Buchholz (2-3, 3.99 ERA) has been pitching well enough to keep his spot until Tim Wakefield and/or Daisuke Matsusaka returns and deserves credit for filling a hole left by John Smoltz's abysmal run in a Red Sox uniform.

This may have something to do with the fact that the trade deadline has now passed. Leading up to the July 30th deadline, Buchholz was the talk of many potential deals that would have sent him to another team.

Each time he takes the mound, Buchholz is looking more and more like a future force to be reckoned with. He's maturing before our very eyes at the young age of 25, and it should be a pleasure to see him develop from here.

The Red Sox are sorely in need of a reliable starting pitcher. With Matsuzaka and Wakefield sidelined, and Smoltz back down in the minors, there couldn't be a better time for Buchholz to establish himself as a steady hand in Boston's rotation.

Voldemort costumes will consist of wizard robes. These robes are long black robes with bell sleeves. You also have the option of obtaining the Voldemort mask.

Woods had simply never lost a major after leading or being tied for the lead, and the world was shocked after witnessing today's events.

While fans were excited by the turn of events today, this really can't be good for golf. The PGA can't be happy about this, nor could any of Tiger's major endorsers. Without a major in 2009, people are beginning to write off Tiger Woods, thinking that he may very well be past his prime.

Here's to hoping that 2010 brings us a Tiger resurgence, and most notably, a major or two. The sport really needs it.

Take a Caribbean Cruise Vacation in November and Revisit the Summer

As August starts to roll through, the reality that the summer is almost over begins to kick in. In about 3 weeks, the pools will be closing and the weekend trips to the shore will cease to happen. It starts to get darker earlier and the joy of summer is gone. Hold on! It doesnt have to end if you book a Caribbean Cruise Vacation and steal one more week of summer away right in the middle of the winter.

There is no arguing the fact that most people are much happier in the summertime. Everyone is more pleasant, we get to go the beach or head out at the pool. When wintertime rolls around, things just seem to change. Instead of getting depressed as the summer drifts away, plan a Caribbean Cruise Vacation and give yourself something to get excited about this winter.

The Western Caribbean will present you with a lot of options and it has become very popular over the years. The ports of Jamaica, Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman and Princess Cays are all part of this swing. While ships will leave from various ports, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale will probably give you the most options. Some of the activities enjoyed in this area are scuba diving (the Caymans in particular), snorkeling and hiking.

The Eastern Caribbean is another nice cruise to take. The ports of St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and St. Marteen are not only popular ports for cruise ships, but they also are very popular as destination vacations. You can actually combine the two and take a cruise that only stops at one port to have more time to enjoy these beautiful areas.

Now if you want to try something that will not be as crowded, but will be as beautiful, try and get something going to the Southern Caribbean. The destinations are not as well known, but this assures you of dealing with less crowds. Spots like Grenada, Antigua, Barbados and St. Barts are among the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean.

Once you have your destination lined up, it is time to figure out how long you are going to go for. If you would like to break that vacation week up, you can actually take two shorter cruises over the winter months and really extend that summer. There are plenty of single and dual destination cruises available that will last only 3 or 4 days.

Even if you do decide to break up your days, make sure at some point that you do take one of the longer Caribbean Cruise Vacations. For most people, 4 days is just not enough time to enjoy everything that his part of the world has to offer. Beautiful islands, incredible food and some of the best scenery in the world is something that you can never get tired of.

The summer ends when you say it does. Just because you see football on television and the weatherman starts calling for snow does not meant that you have to give into the season. Go on a Caribbean Cruise Vacation and steal back a few more of those summer days.
