De-Stress Activities; Golf vs Clay Pigeon Shooting

By Mariko Conisuellian

We all need a good hobby to take our minds off the day to day stresses and hassles of work. We need downtime to relax and to allow ourselves to recharge our batteries. It is important to take this time out otherwise you risk burn out, a breakdown or worse. Two popular sports popular for this purpose are clay pigeon shooting and golf.

One difference between the two sports (aside from the obvious) is the level of physical fitness that's required in order to play golf at a reasonable standard. The swing of the club and the hitting of the ball requires a reasonable amount of effort and it can become quite tiresome keeping it up round the whole course. Shooting does require some physical strength as you will have to hold the gun up and follow the clay with it until you pull the trigger, but there is generally less effort involved in shooting so if you have any inherent injuries they're more likely to affect your golf than your shooting.

Another big different is the time it takes to complete a round of golf compared to going round a clay pigeon shoot. 18 holes of golf takes around 3 hours but to go round a clay pigeon shoot will only take between 1 and 2 even if you shoot up to 100 clays. So where clay pigeon shooting can be done in a couple of hours you generally have to set aside half of the day to take part of to practice.

Another key difference between the sports is that in order to practice golf, you must become a member of a club which can not only incur some fairly large fees, but it also means that your practising area is limited to the same 18 holes every time. With clay pigeon shooting however, the membership fees are a lot lower and the targets can be set up in as many different ways as you can imagine and the overall layout of the ground will usually be changed fairly frequently so that nobody gets bored.

Whichever sport you choose to unwind and relax with, just remember to always try and play for fun rather than competition, otherwise the stress free relaxation that you went there to find will be gone almost completely.
