Some of the Risks of Not Washing Your Hockey Jerseys

By Thomas Moore

If you're a hockey nut like I am you probably try to get out there on the rink at least once a week or more. I play roller hockey in the summer and ice hockey in the winter and usually I'm playing one game and one practice each week. With that kind of heavy work out schedule my hockey jerseys and my hockey equipment can get really disgusting sometimes. If you don't want to develop some serious problems I would recommend washing your hockey jerseys after every game or at least once a week.

Strong odors are caused by certain types of bacteria. Those bacteria cover your hockey jerseys after the games because they are swimming in your sweat drops and loving it. Sweat and bodily fluids flush out the bacteria in your body and off of your skin but deposit all of that disgusting stuff onto your clothing. If you want to cut back on the smell you're going to have to kill the bacteria and the only way to do that is to wash your jerseys properly.

Odor is caused by bacteria. We carry a ton of bacteria on our bodies all day long and it is deposited onto our hockey jerseys through the sweat and blood we secrete during the course of a rough and tumble hockey game. If you don't take care and wash your hockey jerseys and hockey equipment after every game you play you will find that the same bacteria you have on you every day is going to start growing and cause skin infections. You don't want to lose play time because your out sick with a horrible rash do you?

Hockey is a rough sport and your bound to put some wear and tear on your hockey jersey but that's especially true if you don't clean it and fix it up after every game. General wear and tear is okay but without washing your jersey it is going to really put the hurt on the fabrics that make up the shirt and it will be more prone to ripping and holes.

If you fail to wash your jerseys regularly and encounter a problem like a ruined jersey or a skin infection your coach is probably not going to let you play in the next game. To avoid losing out on any loss of game time you should be careful and wash your jerseys. No one likes to sit on the bench and watch their team lose a game so stay in the game with a clean hockey jersey.

Now that you're definitely interested in washing your jerseys after each and every game here's how you do it: put the jersey in the washing machine and wash it using a colder and gentler cycle. Once it is done spinning around in the cooling waters take it out and hang it on a clothesline to dry. Stay away from machine dryers because those will damage the delicate fabrics of the hockey jersey.
